1. A method of marking text in a document with its meaning so that computers can format and find the text more easily. Markup languages such as HTML allow content authors to “mark up” parts of their documents with tags denoting each document element. For example, the title tag (<title>About Our Company</title>) identifies the title of a web page. 2. A social bookmarking label that identifies the subject of a piece of content. For example, readers of a web page about Cadillac automobiles might use del.icio.us to set and share bookmarks (links) named “Cadillac,” “autos,” or “cars.”
