The technique by which a search engine sorts the matches to produce a set of organic search results whose top matches most closely relate to the keyword. The software code that decides exactly how the relevance ranking is performed is called the ranking algorithm, and is a trade secret for each search engine. Relevance ranking algorithms use myriad factors, including the location on the page that matches the keyword, the authority of the page (based on link analysis), and many more.
